A Holistic Guide to Ayurvedic Herbal Preparations and Healing Roots

Ayurvedic Herbal Preparations

Ayurvedic healing relies heavily on how herbs and roots are prepared. The therapeutic value of a root like ginger, turmeric, or licorice changes dramatically depending on whether it is consumed as a powder (Churna), decoction (Kwath), or fresh juice (Swarasa).

Traditional Preparation Methods

  • Kwath (Decoction): Boiling hard roots in water until the liquid is reduced to a quarter of its volume. This extracts the active water-soluble principles of dense herbs.
  • Churna (Powder): Dry roots ground to a fine powder. Usually consumed with a carrier medium (Anupana) like warm water, milk, or honey to aid absorption.
  • Kalka (Paste): Fresh green leaves and roots crushed into a smooth paste, applied externally for skin ailments or consumed internally.

Selecting the right preparation method ensures that the body can fully digest and absorb the herb’s natural healing properties.
